About this scholarship

U.S. citizens or permanent residents in grades 9-12 who plan to attend college after high school graduation may enter the VFW Voice of Democracy audio-essay competition.

The national first-place winner receives a $35,000 scholarship paid directly to their college or vocational school. Additional national scholarships range from $1,000 to $21,000, with 55 total awards across the program.

Record an audio essay on the year's patriotic theme, complete the entry form, and submit to a local sponsoring VFW Post by the deadline. Since 1947, the VFW has awarded over $2 million in scholarships annually through this program.

  • Completed official entry form
  • Typed original essay on the annual patriotic theme
  • Audio recording of the essay in the student's own English voice
  • Length is governed by a TIME limit, not a word count: the audio essay must be 3-5 minutes (+/- 5 seconds maximum). At a typical speaking pace this is roughly 390-650 words, but VFW states no word coun
  • Two-part submission: a TYPED essay AND an audio recording of that essay, recited word-for-word, in the student's own voice and in English.
  • Open to students in grades 9-12 enrolled in a U.S. public, private, parochial, or home-study high school program.
  • Essay must be the student's own original work; inappropriate use of AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT) is prohibited.
  • Essays must be anonymous - do not include name, address, school name, or other personal identifiers in the body of the essay.
  • No music, singing, poetry, or sound effects allowed in the recording.
  • Submitted with a completed official entry form to a local participating VFW Post by the Oct. 31 deadline (midnight).
  • Audio essay must be 3–5 minutes, subject to the stated timing tolerance.
  • Submit the entry to a local participating VFW Post.
  • The essay must be anonymous and must not include identifying information in its body.
  • No music, singing, poetry, or sound effects are permitted in the recording.
  • AI-generated work is prohibited.
