Seneca Polytechnic students may be nominated by any Seneca faculty or staff member. Criteria include a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA, significant voluntary assistance to other students, community service beyond Seneca, and strong personal integrity, character, and tenacity.
One award of $1,000 plus a commemorative trophy is presented annually. A large trophy with each year's winner is displayed at the college; the winner receives a replica. Letters of nomination go to Student Services. A selection committee with Student Services and Seneca Student Federation Inc. representatives chooses the recipient.
The Seneca Student Federation Inc. created the award to honour retired president Stephen E. Quinlan.
