About this scholarship
Outstanding UBC Vancouver M.Mus. or D.M.A. students pursuing piano performance may be considered for this fellowship.
Fellowships totalling $75,000 are made available annually, ideally a minimum of $25,000 per recipient. Subject to continued academic standing, the fellowship may be renewed for one further year (M.Mus.) or up to three years (D.M.A.), or until the respective degree is obtained, whichever is shorter. Funding comes from an endowment established with funds donated to UBC by Roy Barnett (B.Com. 1961).
Recipients are recommended by the School of Music in consultation with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies. There is no separate student application.
Roy performed classical music on accordion in his teens, then set music aside for a career in accounting before returning to study classical piano in retirement. With this fellowship, he intends to help talented musicians pursue excellence in music performance.
