About this scholarship
Undergraduate and graduate students enrolled at a college or university during the prior calendar year, without a previously earned doctoral degree, may submit an original applied research paper to the Society for Applied Anthropology's Peter K. New competition.
First place receives a $3,000 cash prize plus travel and lodging support at the SfAA annual meeting. Second and third place receive $1,500 and $750, with travel stipends for those winners as well.
Submit a single-authored manuscript reporting field research in the social or behavioral sciences, with the research question in health care or human services. Papers are due through the SfAA online form by November 30.
The award honors Peter Kong-ming New, a distinguished medical sociologist-anthropologist and former SfAA president.

What else to submit
- Anonymized manuscript with no identifying information, author name, or affiliation; maximum 45 pages including footnotes, tables, and appendices; 12-point font and double-spaced.
- Manuscript must be anonymized — must not contain any identifying information such as author names or affiliations
- Single-authored work only
- Must be original, unpublished field research (cannot be unaltered undergraduate papers or graduate theses)
- Topic must apply social/behavioral sciences to health care or human services (broadly construed)
- Maximum 45 pages including footnotes, tables, and appendices; 12-point font, double-spaced
- Applicant must be a graduate or undergraduate student registered at a college/university during the calendar year preceding the award
- Submission deadline: November 30 annually
- Manuscripts cannot be unaltered undergraduate papers or graduate theses.
