About this scholarship

African American high school seniors in the Dallas-Fort Worth area with at least a 2.5 GPA who plan to major in fine arts and pursue a related career (music, film, dance, acting, writing, photography, gaming, and similar fields) may apply for the Papy Wellington Saygbay Scholarship from L.I.T.E. (Lifting Individuals Through Education).

One $1,000 award is available. A complete application requires a high-resolution photo, two recommendation letters, an official transcript, an essay of no more than 1,000 words (double-spaced, 12 pt font), and a YouTube video of no more than five minutes showing your craft and how you plan to change the industry.

Finalists attend a virtual interview with the scholarship committee. Incomplete applications are not considered.

  • Completed application form (with extracurricular/community service activities, honors/awards, scholarships applied for, GPA, class rank, colleges, potential major)
  • Single high-resolution digital photo of the applicant
  • Two letters of recommendation (from a professor, administrator, or community member such as a minister or chapter advisor)
  • Most recent official school transcript (proof of GPA, min 2.5 on 4.0 scale)
  • YouTube video link, no more than 5 minutes, displaying your gift and explaining how you plan to change the industry by having a career in Fine Arts
  • Structured interview required for finalists (must attend to be considered)
  • Eligibility: African American male or female DFW (Dallas-Fort Worth) high school senior planning to major in Fine Arts / pursue an arts career
  • Finalists must attend a virtual interview with the scholarship committee.
  • Incomplete applications are not considered.
