About this scholarship
Operalia, founded by Placido Domingo, is the world's leading opera competition for young singers and is open to all voice types, ages 20-32, of any nationality. Roughly 30-40 singers are selected from recorded applications to compete live in quarterfinals, semifinals, and a gala final with full orchestra; the host city changes each year.
Applicants apply online with a passport copy, one-page biography and resume, headshot, and video recordings of two opera arias from different operas sung in the original language with live accompaniment. There is no application fee beyond a small portal charge.
First Prize is $30,000 for the best female and best male singer, with $20,000 second prizes, $10,000 third prizes, and additional zarzuela, Birgit Nilsson, and audience prizes. The 2026 application deadline was May 12, 2026.
