About this scholarship
Graduate students pursuing study in acoustics or closely related science and engineering fields may apply. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents at the time of application and be accepted into or in good standing in a graduate degree program.
The fellowship provides a $30,000 stipend for one nine-month academic year, renewable for a second year with satisfactory progress. ASA also covers up to $1,000 in travel to a national ASA meeting and encourages host institutions to waive tuition.
Applications are due annually by March 23. Submit a completed PDF application, official transcripts, GRE scores, CV, personal statement, and three reference letters to asa@acousticalsociety.org. Winners are notified by mid-June.
ASA established this fellowship in 1992 and renamed it for Dr. James E. West, co-inventor of the foil electret microphone, to support graduate researchers committed to broadening access in acoustics and STEM.
