About this scholarship
Massachusetts foster children under age 25 placed through the Department of Children and Families who enroll full-time at an eligible U.S. college may receive a Foster Child Grant of up to $6,000 per year for up to five consecutive years.
Recipients must have signed a voluntary agreement with DCF for care and services beyond age 18. Grants may be used at any college or university in the continental United States.
File the FAFSA or Massachusetts State Application for Financial Aid and contact the DHE Office of Student Financial Assistance or your DCF social worker to apply. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents in compliance with Selective Service and not in default on student loans.

- FAFSA or Massachusetts State Application for Financial Aid (MASFA)
- Permanent legal Massachusetts resident; U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen under Title IV
- Placed in the custody of the Department of Children and Families (DCF) through a Care and Protection Petition
- Under age 25 at the start of the academic year
- Enrolled full-time (at least 12 credits or equivalent) at an eligible institution, in good standing with satisfactory academic progress
- Must apply for financial aid via FAFSA (or MASFA); award is based on demonstrated financial need and available funding
- Compliant with Selective Service registration; not in default on federal/state student loans and not owing a refund on prior aid
- Apply by contacting the DHE Office of Student Financial Assistance or a DCF social worker (apply online by July 1 prior to fall; rolling thereafter)
- Funding may continue for up to five consecutive years.
