About this scholarship

Open to UBC Vancouver students who have excelled in a course in Middle English or Old English language and/or literature.

The prize is $5,750, funded through an endowment established with a gift from the Estate of Mahmoud Aly Manzalaoui. The award is made on the recommendation of the Faculty of Arts; for graduate students, the recommendation is made in consultation with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies. There is no separate student application.

Dr. Manzalaoui (1924-2015) was a scholar and teacher at UBC known for lively classroom readings of Chaucer and other medieval topics. He worked to impress on students the importance of literature and its relation to life.
