About this scholarship
U.S. or Puerto Rico residents ages 17 to 24 who lost a parent or legal guardian and plan to attend college, university, or trade school may apply for the Life Happens Life Lessons Scholarship.
Award amounts vary, including tiered prizes with a $15,000 grand prize.
Submit a 500-word essay or three-minute video on how the death affected you financially and emotionally, including your college plans and any impact of life insurance. Applications are accepted February 1 through March 1.
Life Happens provides financial assistance to students facing hardship after the loss of a parent or guardian.

- Original 500-word essay or three-minute video describing how the death of a parent or guardian affected the applicant financially and emotionally, including college plans, life-insurance impact, and steps taken to provide for self or family
- Applicants may submit EITHER a 500-word essay OR a 3-minute video (choose one) addressing the same prompt
- Video alternative limited to no more than 3 minutes
- Submission via online portal (webportalapp.com)
- Application window is February 1 - March 1 (annual); late submissions not accepted
- Late submissions are not accepted.
