About this scholarship
The Jacob Wendell Scholarship Prize, established in 1899, is awarded to one Harvard College sophomore judged the most promising and broad-ranging scholar in the class, without regard to financial need. Selection is based on the student's first-year academic record, a writing sample, a short essay, and a letter of recommendation. Students who finish their first year in the top tier of their class are invited to apply by the Prize Office in July after freshman year. For the 2026–2027 competition, all application materials are due by 11:59 p.m. on September 17, 2026. The prize pays twenty-one thousand dollars.
