About this scholarship
York University LA&PS English Department students enrolled in a 2000- or 3000-level English course may receive the H.K. Girling Literature Prize. The prize goes to a student who wrote an outstanding course essay and shows commitment to literature in and beyond the classroom.
One $500 prize is awarded annually on the recommendation of the English Department. No application is required.
The prize was established in 2002 by friends and family in memory of Professor Harry K. Girling, who taught in York's English Department from 1962 to 1984.
Essay question
What else to submit
- Submit a clean copy of an essay previously written for a 2000- or 3000-level English course
- Include a copy of the assignment instructions/guidelines for that essay
- Include an accompanying letter (from the student or a faculty member) explaining the student's commitment to literature in and out of the classroom
- Files must be PDF or DOC; only full nomination files are considered
- Applicant must demonstrate commitment to literature both in the classroom and in other ways
- One $500 prize is awarded annually on the recommendation of the English Department. The description explicitly states that no application is required.
