Talented students majoring in voice opera at the UBC Vancouver School of Music may be nominated. Promise as an operatic singer is the primary selection criterion.
The award is a $1,000 prize offered by Prof. Nancy Hermiston in honour of Dr. Irving Guttman, C.M., O.B.C. (DLit 2009) and Mr. Robert Dales. Recipients are chosen on the recommendation of the Chair of the Voice and Opera Division; for graduate students, the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies is consulted. There is no separate student application.
Dr. Guttman played a pivotal role in bringing opera to Western Canada, establishing companies in Edmonton, Winnipeg, and Vancouver over more than four decades.
