About this scholarship

U.S. undergraduate students, including high school graduates and GED recipients, may apply for Boren Scholarships to study less commonly taught languages abroad in world regions critical to U.S. interests, such as Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East.

Awards provide up to $25,000 for language-intensive study abroad. In exchange for funding, recipients commit to at least one year of federal government service after graduation.

Submit a national application by the January 27 deadline. The program was created through the National Security Education Program to expand U.S. expertise in strategically important languages and cultures.
