UCL Law LNAT essay
Every UCL undergraduate Law applicant takes the LNAT. Its second section asks the candidate to choose one of three essay questions in the timed test. UCL says an Admissions Tutor marks that essay as evidence of argument, structure, and writing; it is an assessment within the LNAT, not an essay uploaded separately to UCL.

What to prepare
- 1Choose the question you can argue from more than one side, then state a defensible position early.
- 2Use each paragraph to develop a reason and consider a plausible objection instead of relying on unsupported claims.
- 3End by explaining why your conclusion follows from the tradeoffs you examined, without pretending the unpublished test questions are known in advance.
How to approach the writing
- Practise planning and revising an argument under the LNAT's timed conditions, while keeping your UCAS statement focused on law study and preparation.
- Register for the actual LNAT; a separate practice essay or extra UCL upload does not replace the test.
Before you submit
UCL requires the LNAT by December 31, 2026 for the 2027 cycle. The test lasts two hours and 15 minutes across multiple-choice and essay sections; confirm your booked test date and the current LNAT instructions.
