CSM Graphic Communication Design personal statement and portfolio writing
Graphic Communication Design applicants start with a UCAS personal statement. Applicants invited onward submit a digital portfolio of no more than 25 pages, including brief explanations of work, a design influence, and a theme of interest.
Writing format
UCAS personal statement, then invited digital portfolio with short project explanations
What to prepare
- 1In the UCAS statement, connect your interest in graphic communication to study, making, and independent exploration.
- 2For the invited portfolio, explain the intention and learning behind each selected project in a short caption.
- 3Identify a historical or contemporary designer who influenced one project and explain the connection.
- 4Present a theme that interests you and explain how your work investigates it.
How to approach the writing
- Select projects that show different ways of thinking and making within the page cap; UAL recommends four to eight projects.
- Write captions that reveal decisions and revision, leaving the images room to demonstrate the outcome.
