CSM Fine Art personal statement and portfolio captions
Central Saint Martins' BA Fine Art starts with the three-part UCAS personal statement. Invited applicants then submit recent work through PebblePad in a portfolio of no more than 25 pages. Its distinctive writing requirement is one sentence on each page describing the ideas and interests behind that work.

What to prepare
- 1Use the UCAS statement to explain why you want to study fine art, how prior learning prepared you, and what you have pursued outside formal education.
- 2Write one sentence per portfolio page that names an idea or artistic question instead of repeating what the image visibly contains.
- 3For works in progress, use the caption to clarify a material experiment, research influence, or decision that changed the work.
How to approach the writing
- Show both finished projects and development work within the 25-page limit, following the course's published portfolio advice.
- Keep the short portfolio sentences separate from the UCAS statement; they explain individual work rather than your whole application.
