Manchester Architecture foundation portfolio statement
Manchester's Architecture with Foundation Year is a UK widening-participation route. Applicants who meet its academic and background criteria may be asked for a portfolio about their home and neighbourhood. Its three-part written statement asks why they represented that place as they did, why they want Manchester School of Architecture, and which architect they admire. This differs from the standard BA Architecture portfolio statement.
Writing format
Three written answers capped at 300, 150, and 150 words, with up to nine artworks
What to prepare
- 1Explain the choices behind how your artwork represents your home or neighbourhood, using the 300-word answer to connect place and visual decisions.
- 2Use the 150-word Manchester answer to identify a concrete feature of the school's architecture study that fits your interests.
- 3Name one architect in the final 150 words and explain a particular work or design approach that you respond to.
How to approach the writing
- Apply through UCAS and wait for Manchester to request the portfolio after checking your eligibility.
- Combine the visual work and three written answers into one PDF for Manchester Self-service; follow the task's due date and 20 MB file cap.
Before you submit
The 2027 foundation route is limited to UK applicants meeting the published background criteria; international applicants should check the standard BA instead. Manchester does not give one universal portfolio deadline on the course page: use the due date in your Self-service To Do List.
