York Creative Writing statement and portfolio
York's Creative Writing application asks for a statement about why you love creative writing and want to study it at York, alongside a portfolio of poems, stories, or personal essays. This is the English department's Creative Writing route, not AMPD's Screenwriting and Creative Producing application.
Writing format
500–750-word statement of interest and a 10–15-page writing portfolio
Academic integrity
York requires a note explaining any generative-AI use in portfolio writing. Submit your own work and follow the department's disclosure instructions.
What to prepare
- 1Use the 500–750 words to explain what draws you to writing, what you have learned from doing it, and why York's program fits your next step.
- 2Choose 10–15 pages that show your own voice across poems, stories, or personal essays. The portfolio is writing evidence, not a second statement of interest.
- 3York asks applicants to disclose how and why generative AI featured in any portfolio writing. Check the department's current instructions before submitting.
How to approach the writing
- Apply first, then use your York reference number to open MyFile and select the Creative Writing Program under Supplementary Information Forms.
- Review the department's eligibility and portfolio directions for your applicant route; do not substitute the separate form used by current York students entering upper-level workshops.
Before you submit
The Creative Writing department and York's 2027 deadline table list February 5, 2027 for the statement and portfolio in MyFile. A separate summary on York's program page still shows February 1; verify the deadline in MyFile and with the department before relying on either date.
