VIU Interior Design 300-word statement
VIU's first-year Interior Design application has two steps: apply to the university, then submit a program portfolio and supporting writing through SlideRoom. The statement must explain the applicant's reasons for applying, academic and career goals, and understanding of the interior design profession. Each portfolio item also needs a brief description.

300-word statement, 6–12 portfolio items, and short work descriptions
What to prepare
- 1Use the 300 words to connect your interest in interior design with a specific space, design problem, or experience you have studied.
- 2Explain the academic and career goals behind your application, including what you understand about the profession's work and skills.
- 3For each of the 6–12 portfolio pieces, briefly identify what you made, the medium, and what interested or inspired you.
How to approach the writing
- Draft the statement and portfolio captions separately so each fulfills its own part of the SlideRoom checklist.
- Choose original pieces across media that show how you observe and make things; the department explicitly welcomes work beyond polished interior designs.
Before you submit
VIU lists January 15, 2027 for early consideration and March 31, 2027 as the Fall application close. Its program page gives inconsistent later portfolio-review dates, so use the current SlideRoom checklist and confirm the final document deadline with the department before applying.
