UVic Writing MFA letter of intent
UVic's MFA in Writing asks for a 500-word letter about the applicant's writing background, planned project and genre, goals for the program, and interest in teaching. The creative portfolio is a separate submission with different page ranges for poetry and other genres. This is a graduate writing application, not UVic's undergraduate creative-writing route.

What to prepare
- 1Describe the writing practice and reading or artistic influences that led to the proposed MFA project.
- 2Name the genre and a concrete project direction, then explain what you hope to develop during the program.
- 3Include a specific paragraph on learning to teach and gaining teaching-assistant experience, as UVic requests.
How to approach the writing
- Keep the letter near 500 words and let the portfolio show the writing itself: 10–15 poetry pages or 20–30 pages for the other listed genres.
- If applying in more than one genre, prepare a separate letter and portfolio for each; no supervisor agreement is needed before application.
Before you submit
UVic lists November 30 for Fall 2027 applications and says late applications are not accepted except for technical difficulties. Verify the current genre, portfolio format, file names, and referee instructions in the graduate application before uploading.
