UVic Social Dimensions of Health letter of intent
UVic's Social Dimensions of Health MA, MSc, and PhD routes ask for a research-focused letter of intent. The applicant names a degree route, explains a proposed thesis or dissertation direction, and identifies confirmed supervisors with a rationale for their fit. A writing sample and written supervisory support are separate required documents; this is not the MPH letter.

What to prepare
- 1Identify the MA, MSc, or PhD route and a research question or proposed project that fits the interdisciplinary program.
- 2Explain how prior study and experience led to the project and how the degree serves your future work.
- 3Name each confirmed supervisor and explain how their expertise supports the proposed research, as UVic explicitly requests.
How to approach the writing
- Contact potential supervisors before applying; a statement naming someone who has not agreed to support you does not satisfy the separate support requirement.
- Keep the letter within two single-spaced pages in 12-point type with one-inch margins. Submit the academic writing sample separately.
Before you submit
Applications for September entry are due January 15, with referee reports due one week later. UVic requires written support from at least one Social Dimensions of Health faculty member at application. Confirm degree-route, supervisor, and document rules in the live application.
