UVic Law JD personal statement
UVic Law requires every first year JD applicant to submit a two part personal statement. Part A explains why law and UVic fit the applicant's background and goals. Part B outlines academic, work, community, and other experiences with reflection on their relevance. These parts also inform entrance scholarship assessment.
Writing format
Part A narrative of up to 750 words and Part B outline, recommended at one to three pages
What to prepare
- 1Use Part A to connect a real experience or question to your interest in law and the UVic Law community; keep it within 750 words.
- 2Write Part B as an outline of additional experiences, achievements, and learning, rather than a second narrative essay or an unexplained résumé.
- 3Explain acronyms and specialized roles in plain language so the committee can understand the work and its relevance.
How to approach the writing
- Give Part A a clear reason for choosing UVic; use Part B for useful evidence that does not fit the narrative.
- Check your chosen JD admission stream for any additional statement. JD/JID applicants have a separate program statement about Indigenous community connection and the program.
Before you submit
UVic Law's 2027 application window opened September 1, 2026 and closes December 1, 2026. Submit both parts in the application portal and check the requirements for your specific JD or JD/JID stream; Part B is recommended at one to three pages.
