UVic Engineering and Computer Science optional personal essay
UVic's Expanded Qualifications route lets Engineering or Computer Science applicants add evidence when they think grades alone may not secure admission. The personal essay is a specific explanation of why they want this faculty and how activities in their Personal Information Profile prepared them. It is optional and is considered only after an ordinary UVic application and introductory email.
Writing format
Optional one-page personal essay, Personal Information Profile and signed reference
What to prepare
- 1Explain why Engineering or Computer Science at UVic matches a problem, project or area of study you have pursued.
- 2Choose activities already listed in the Personal Information Profile and show how each developed preparation or motivation for the chosen field.
- 3Use the essay for the connection between experience and goals; let the separate profile record the activity details.
How to approach the writing
- Keep the essay to one single-spaced page in at least 12-point type, submitted as a PDF or Word file.
- Ask an educator or another eligible referee for a signed, dated, one-page letter supporting the essay, then email the package to the assigned admission assistant.
Before you submit
UVic's page gives an April 1 submission deadline without naming an intake year. Confirm that the Expanded Qualifications category applies to your 2027 application, and send the profile, essay and reference only after receiving your introductory email.
