U of T Music Questionnaire short essay
U of T Music applicants complete a separate Music Questionnaire after their university application. It asks for one short essay chosen from four questions shown in the portal, alongside audition information, repertoire, references, and any program-specific recordings or portfolios. The public page does not reproduce the four essay questions.

What to prepare
- 1Read all four live questions before choosing the one that lets you explain a specific musical decision or experience.
- 2Show how you listen, practise, compose, perform, teach, or collaborate through one example rather than repeating your repertoire list.
- 3Connect what you learned to the Faculty of Music path you selected, while answering the exact question in the questionnaire.
How to approach the writing
- Keep the essay within 250–1,000 words and use the separate fields for audition method, repertoire, theory background, and references.
- Enable your JOINid after the OUAC acknowledgment; the Music Questionnaire is not available before that step.
Before you submit
U of T recommends submitting the Music Questionnaire by January 8, 2027 and lists January 15 as the final application deadline. The page says September 2027 program information is still being updated, so confirm the four questions and your program's links in the live portal.
