TMU Professional Music statement and portfolio writing
TMU's Professional Music BFA asks every applicant for a 250-word statement about a music career, university study, and fit with the program. The portfolio then branches: artists submit a demo and explain their role and creative process in up to 500 words; music-business applicants write a cited essay of up to 500 words comparing two ways listeners discover music. A résumé and two reference forms are separate requirements.

What to prepare
- 1Use the shared statement to explain what draws you to work in music, why university study is the next step, and what makes this particular degree fit your direction.
- 2For the artist route, identify your own contribution to the demo and describe the choices behind it; TMU allows collaborators but asks you to make your role clear.
- 3For the business route, compare two concrete discovery methods from a business perspective, including a benefit and limitation of each, and cite any sources used.
How to approach the writing
- Label your chosen portfolio route as option A or B and combine the statement with its route-specific writing in one PDF, as TMU instructs.
- Keep the résumé, demo link when applicable, and reference forms in their assigned portal fields rather than treating them as essay text.
Before you submit
For Fall 2027, TMU lists February 1, 2027 or ten business days after applying, whichever is later, for non-academic materials. Confirm the live ChooseTMU checklist and that both references show as received before the deadline.
