TMU Image Arts: Film written statement
TMU's Image Arts: Film BFA asks for a short written statement and a separate project outline alongside a 90-second film on the 2027 theme, A Misunderstood Message, three visual works, and a résumé. The statement asks applicants to choose one influential film and explain its personal and wider effect.
Writing format
A 300-word film essay and a separate project outline of up to 500 plus 100 words
Academic integrity
TMU says the written statement must reflect only the applicant's own effort. Draft and revise it yourself, and check the current program instructions before submission.
What to prepare
- 1Name one film and explain a particular formal or storytelling choice that influenced you, rather than listing several favourites.
- 2Show how that choice changed what you thought cinema could do, using a scene or technique you can describe precisely.
- 3Address the film's wider effect on society or cinema with a supportable example; separate that effect from your personal response.
- 4For the separate project outline, describe a real-life dramatic event as a proposed short film, why it would work on screen, and the production role you would take. Do not submit a script.
How to approach the writing
- Reserve space in the 300-word total for all three parts of TMU's question. The statement should add reasoning that the portfolio cannot show by itself.
- Keep the statement in your own voice and save it as a PDF. The separate résumé has a two-page limit.
- The project outline allows up to 500 words or two pages for the event, then no more than 100 words for why it would make a good film and your role; upload it as another PDF.
Before you submit
TMU lists February 1, 2027 or ten business days after applying, whichever is later, for the non-academic materials. Check the live portfolio theme and upload every part through ChooseTMU, including the assessment fee.
