Concordia Creative Writing letter of intent
Concordia's undergraduate Creative Writing major and minor require a portfolio in at least two genres and a separate letter of intent. The letter names the program, explains the applicant's background as a reader and writer, discusses study goals, and identifies literary work that influenced them. Both pieces are uploaded together as one PDF.
Writing format
Brief letter of intent and an English writing portfolio of no more than 15 pages
What to prepare
- 1Discuss one literary work through a writing choice that affected your own practice, such as voice, structure, or point of view.
- 2Explain how your reading and writing developed and what you want to learn in the program, instead of repeating a list of publications or awards.
- 3Select work in at least two of fiction, poetry, drama, and creative nonfiction; academic essays and journal entries do not count toward this portfolio.
How to approach the writing
- Address the letter to the Coordinator of Creative Writing and use Concordia's letter template.
- Keep the letter outside the 15-page portfolio count, then combine both in the single PDF required for upload.
Before you submit
Concordia lists March 1 for September admission and November 1 for January admission for new undergraduate applicants. Internal and visiting-student deadlines differ. Complete the university application as well as the program upload, and verify the current intake's dates before submitting.
