Carleton Music creative practice personal statement
Carleton's Bachelor of Music evaluates a Creative Practice Portfolio alongside the academic record. Applicants submit performance recordings or examples of composition and sound work, then upload a personal statement about their musical background, preparation, interests, goals, and interest in Carleton. The separate theory and ear-training test is for placement, not the admission decision.

Personal statement of up to 500 words and a creative practice portfolio
What to prepare
- 1Describe the music or sonic work you actually make, including informal practice, lessons, ensembles, or production experience that shaped it.
- 2Connect a specific musical interest to what you want to study next and why Carleton's broad approach to music suits that direction.
- 3Use the 500-word limit to explain the context behind your selected recordings or works instead of repeating a list of pieces.
How to approach the writing
- Choose the live-performance or other-creative-practice portfolio route that represents your primary work and follow its distinct evidence rules.
- Apply through OUAC before requesting the portfolio form; Carleton needs your applicant number to issue the upload link.
Before you submit
Carleton lists March 1 for the university application and March 5 to request the portfolio form. The coordinator emails the actual portfolio submission deadline and link. Confirm that email and the Fall 2027 instructions before uploading your statement and work.
