Carleton Industrial Design portfolio statement
Carleton's Bachelor of Industrial Design requires a portfolio alongside the academic application. The portfolio includes a statement explaining why the applicant wants to study industrial design, a résumé, and work that shows creative range and problem solving. Carleton suggests 10–15 pieces and asks applicants to explain their own role in team projects.

What to prepare
- 1In the statement, connect a design problem you have noticed to why industrial design is the field you want to study.
- 2Use short notes beside selected works to explain the problem, experiment, and decisions behind the final result rather than just naming materials.
- 3For a team project, identify exactly what you designed or built and what you learned from working with others.
How to approach the writing
- Let the statement explain your direction as a designer while the portfolio supplies evidence of how you work.
- Include both two-dimensional and three-dimensional or other creative work when it shows the range Carleton asks to see.
Before you submit
For Fall 2027, Carleton lists March 1 for the academic application and March 5 for the portfolio. The school accepts digital submissions only; use its current portfolio instructions for file format and upload steps. Its public page does not give a statement word limit.
