UCalgary Law JD statement of purpose and perspective
UCalgary Law's Statement of Purpose and Perspective is part of the online first-year JD application. Every applicant answers the UCalgary-specific topic and chooses two of eight other published topics. This three-answer format differs from a single general law-school personal statement.
Writing format
One mandatory essay and two chosen essays, up to 300 words each
What to prepare
- 1For mandatory topic 1, connect your own law-related interests to specific UCalgary learning opportunities and explain what you would contribute to its community.
- 2Choose two optional topics that reveal different evidence of your preparation, experience, or perspective; the school says no combination is preferred.
- 3Answer the selected questions directly with a concrete example and reflection, keeping each answer within its own 300-word limit.
How to approach the writing
- Read all eight optional topics on the official page before choosing; do not recycle the same story across all three responses.
- Put the statement in the online application. Reapplicants must provide a new statement rather than resubmit an earlier one.
Before you submit
The Fall 2027 application closes December 1, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. MST. Supporting documents are due February 15, 2027; verify the live application and your admission category before submitting.
