University of Alberta Law JD personal statement
Alberta Law asks first-year JD applicants for a PDF personal statement, uploaded to Launchpad after the application. Its published guidance emphasizes clear, authentic writing and evidence of achievement, community contribution, responsibilities, and relevant circumstances. JD admission normally follows post-secondary study.

What to prepare
- 1Select experiences that show your preparation for legal education and connect them to why you want to study law.
- 2Where relevant, explain community contributions, leadership, responsibilities, or circumstances affecting academic performance without simply repeating a résumé.
- 3Indigenous applicants may discuss how lived experience or systemic barriers relate to the decision to pursue law, if they wish; the school says the statement should add to the résumé.
How to approach the writing
- Write in your own voice and keep the PDF within the 1,000-word limit.
- Submit the main application, then upload the statement through the UAlberta Launchpad portal by the document deadline.
Before you submit
The published statement deadline is February 1 at 11:59:59 p.m. Mountain Time, while the JD application page lists a December 1 application deadline. Confirm both dates and the live Fall 2027 portal before applying.
