McGill BSW personal statement and social problem analysis
McGill's BSW application requires its Social Work Written Submission in the applicant portal, along with two social work-related references. The form currently linked by the School of Social Work has a personal statement about becoming a social worker and a separate analysis of a social problem. It also records relevant paid, volunteer, or placement experience. The linked form was revised in February 2025, so applicants should confirm that their intake uses the same version.

What to prepare
- 1In the personal statement, connect your motivation for social work to specific personal, academic, volunteer, or work experiences and what they taught you.
- 2In the separate social problem analysis, identify one issue, examine contributing factors, and explain its relevance to social work.
- 3Describe skills and values you already bring to that issue, then name what you still need to develop. Keep this analysis distinct from the personal narrative.
How to approach the writing
- Draft each section within its own 600-word limit and include the word count the linked form requests.
- Prepare the experience table with accurate roles, dates, responsibilities, and hours; arrange two referees who know your work or potential in a helping capacity.
Before you submit
The School of Social Work still links a form revised February 13, 2025. Confirm the current BSW form and deadlines in McGill's applicant portal before finalizing either 600-word response. Complete all required form sections and upload the document under the Social Work Written Submission checklist item; referees submit their letters separately.
