McGill mature-applicant statement of intent
McGill asks applicants seeking Mature Student status for a statement describing their proposed area of study, readiness for university work, and previous educational experiences. The route has strict citizenship, age, recent-study, and course requirements; McGill decides whether an applicant qualifies for Mature status after reviewing the file. This statement is not a general requirement for all first-year applicants.

Statement of intent of no more than five pages, plus a separate activity and employment record
What to prepare
- 1Identify the area you want to study and connect it to concrete recent preparation, including the qualifying courses relevant to your chosen faculty.
- 2Explain how earlier education and the time since it shaped your readiness now; evaluate what you learned rather than simply listing institutions.
- 3Use the separate employment and activity record for chronology, allowing the statement to explain the decisions and evidence behind your return to study.
How to approach the writing
- Check Mature Student eligibility before drafting. McGill's public rule requires Canadian citizenship or permanent residence and recent qualifying coursework; prior academic history may instead make a transfer or other category appropriate.
- Upload the statement and required supporting documents through the McGill Applicant Portal; enter referees there so they receive the university's instructions.
Before you submit
McGill's mature-applicant page lists May 1 for the general application and June 15 for supporting documents, with earlier or separate deadlines for Music and some other programs, but it does not label these dates as a Fall 2027 cycle. Confirm your program's live deadline and extra documents. Desautels currently does not admit Mature applicants.
