Laurier applicant background and special case statements
Laurier offers two different ways to add context after an undergraduate application. The optional Applicant Background Summary (ABS) describes extracurricular involvement and personal achievements. A separate personal statement is for recent or present circumstances that affected academic standing. Neither is a universal required admissions essay, and the school asks applicants to keep special circumstances out of the ABS.

What to prepare
- 1For the ABS, select activities or responsibilities that show what you contributed, learned, or sustained outside class; use the portal's actual fields rather than inventing an essay prompt.
- 2If circumstances affected your grades, explain their timing and academic effect in the separate Special Case or Extenuating Circumstances form. Disclose only details you choose to share.
- 3Keep evidence in the form that owns it: extracurricular context in the ABS, academic disruption in the special case statement.
How to approach the writing
- Open My Applications in Laurier's applicant portal and check both forms before drafting. One ABS serves multiple Laurier program choices.
- The Faculty of Music collects additional information through auditions, so its applicants do not need the ABS.
Before you submit
Laurier recommends submitting either form within two weeks of applying. Its Fall 2027 deadline for both is April 25, 2027; other entry terms have different dates. The school does not publish a universal word limit or fixed prompt on this page, so follow the live portal fields.
