Guelph DVM personal essay and experience reflections
Guelph's Doctor of Veterinary Medicine application asks applicants to reflect on their preparation for veterinary practice, motivation and relevant experiences. This is a professional degree application after post-secondary study, not a first-year undergraduate supplement. The live form supplies the essay questions and character limits; Guelph does not publish those limits on its overview page.

Academic integrity
Guelph prohibits AI tools and other external assistance to generate, revise or refine DVM application content. The essay and reflections must be entirely the applicant's own work; violating this rule results in disqualification.
What to prepare
- 1Use direct veterinary supervision and animal-related experiences to explain what you learned about the profession, including work beyond pet ownership.
- 2Reflect on a specific decision or challenge and connect it to the interpersonal, ethical or community responsibilities of veterinary practice.
- 3Keep each reflection consistent with the activities, dates and roles elsewhere in the application; answer the live question within its character limit.
How to approach the writing
- Record your own experiences and reflections while they are fresh, then write the final responses yourself without outside drafting or editing assistance.
- Domestic applicants submit the Background Information Form through WebAdvisor after the initial application. International applicants follow the VMCAS and Guelph supplemental route applicable to them.
Before you submit
For the Fall 2027 domestic cycle, Guelph lists December 1, 2026 for the initial application and January 15, 2027 at 4:30 p.m. Eastern for the Background Information Form. International VMCAS applicants have an earlier September 15, 2026 application deadline. Confirm your cohort, live questions and all separate referee, transcript and Casper deadlines before submitting.
