Emily Carr Indigenous Learner Pathway personal statement
Emily Carr offers this alternative undergraduate admission pathway to prospective students of Indigenous ancestry who are at least 19 and do not meet its ordinary high-school or transfer requirements. Applicants submit a personal statement and two reference letters addressed to the Aboriginal Admissions Committee, as well as transcripts and a portfolio. This statement is additional to the Foundation portfolio writing assignment; it is not a replacement for that assignment.

Emily Carr requires applicants' own portfolio creations and does not accept items wholly or substantially made with generative AI. Keep the statement and portfolio true to your own work.
What to prepare
- 1Explain your academic and artistic goals in your own terms, connecting them to work, learning or community experiences that shaped your practice.
- 2Choose a few current artworks or processes that make those goals concrete, without turning the statement into a duplicate inventory of the portfolio.
- 3Give referees enough context to assess your potential for success, and ensure their letters and your statement are addressed to the Aboriginal Admissions Committee.
How to approach the writing
- Apply as a high-school applicant through EducationPlannerBC and declare prior high-school or post-secondary study, as the pathway instructs.
- Submit the statement and two references with the application, by email to admissions, or by mail as Emily Carr permits; submit the portfolio separately through the ECU Admissions Portal.
Before you submit
This pathway applies only to Indigenous applicants aged 19 or older who do not meet standard high-school or transfer requirements. Emily Carr first considers ordinary admission where possible. Its pathway page does not assign a separate statement word limit or intake deadline, so check the current undergraduate application calendar and portal for the entry term.
