Algonquin interior design portfolio essay
Applicants who meet Algonquin's academic prerequisites are invited to submit a Bachelor of Interior Design portfolio. Its Home Test includes a 300–500-word essay about interest in interior design, the difference between interior design and decorating, and the applicant's motivation and influences. The essay is one part of a visual portfolio, not a college-wide admission essay.

Academic integrity
Algonquin does not permit AI-assisted tools or AI-generated imagery to create portfolio content. Write the essay and create every portfolio piece yourself.
What to prepare
- 1Explain your interest in studying interior design through an observation, project, or experience that is genuinely yours.
- 2Show how you understand interior design as planning functional spaces, rather than using the essay as a general description of decorating taste.
- 3Identify the people, places, or design work that influenced you and connect them to the work in your portfolio.
How to approach the writing
- Wait for the academic-eligibility invitation, then include the typed essay at the end of the single PDF portfolio.
- Check that the essay and 10–15 creative examples tell a consistent story without merely describing each image.
Before you submit
Algonquin requires a single PDF of at most 25 MB and bans AI-generated imagery and AI-assisted tools for portfolio content. Confirm the current Home Test, email address, and intake instructions before submitting your own work.
