Rice supplemental essays and The Box
Rice asks Common App first-year applicants to explain their academic interests and why Rice appeals to them in two short essays. A longer response chooses between a residential-college perspective and a contribution-to-community question. The Box is a two-dimensional image about something meaningful to the applicant; Rice says the image is not used for evaluation. QuestBridge applicants answer the same two short essays, while the 500-word choice is optional for that route.

What to prepare
- 1In 150 words, connect an academic area you selected to a question or project you would explore at Rice.
- 2Use the second 150-word answer for a specific Rice experience and explain why it fits the way you learn or participate.
- 3Choose one 500-word community prompt: what you would share in the residential college system, or how your background informs the change you hope to make.
- 4Select a two-dimensional image for The Box that conveys an interest or value without needing a written explanation.
How to approach the writing
- Give the academic, Rice-fit, and community answers separate jobs; repeat neither the main personal statement nor the activities list.
- Keep The Box distinct from the essays. Rice describes it as a personal image, not an extra written response or an evaluative portfolio.
Before you submit
Rice publishes different requirements for Common App and QuestBridge applicants: the 500-word response is optional for QuestBridge, and The Box applies to both. Confirm your selected route and any Architecture or Shepherd School materials before submitting.
