Northwestern supplemental essays
Northwestern's required first-year answer asks which aspects of your background shaped how you imagine engaging in its community. Applicants may also answer up to two optional questions about campus expression, an interdisciplinary idea, belonging, location, or the perspectives they would contribute. Its application materials make the Common Application personal essay optional.
Writing format
Common/Coalition: one required 300-word answer and up to two optional answers under 200 words each
What to prepare
- 1For the required answer, choose a specific part of your identity, school, household, or community context and show how it shapes the way you would participate at Northwestern.
- 2For an optional answer, choose a distinct question: what you would paint on The Rock, a class or project you would create, a community you would join, what draws you to the location, or a perspective you would bring.
- 3If you submit the optional personal essay, use it to add a dimension the Northwestern short answers do not cover.
How to approach the writing
- Ground the 300-word required answer in an actual experience and its effect on your expected campus engagement, rather than writing a generic why-school essay.
- Do not fill optional slots with repeated material; Northwestern says applicants may answer zero, one, or two and more answers carry no extra weight.
Before you submit
QuestBridge applicants have a different route: Northwestern says all its short answers are optional for them. Check the questions in your platform; answering more optional questions does not itself earn extra weight.
