The Dr. Karen Guinee Scholarship supports students entering Year 1 of Galway's GY501 undergraduate Medicine degree who face financial or other barriers to study. Registered first-year students apply separately for the scholarship; the statement is not a general medicine admission supplement.

What to prepare
- 1Identify the financial or other obstacles that could make entering or sustaining medical study difficult, with only the personal detail needed to explain their effect.
- 2Connect academic preparation and career aspirations to how this medicine program can help you progress.
- 3Explain how the scholarship would address the barriers you described rather than repeating a general account of motivation for medicine.
How to approach the writing
- Stay within the published 750-word maximum and submit the statement through the scholarship's separate form.
- Arrange the required reference from a high-school principal, vice principal, or guidance counsellor; shortlisted applicants may be invited to an in-person interview.

The published 2026 application opens September 14 and closes October 16. Confirm registration in Year 1 of GY501, the current scholarship form, and any later-cycle dates before applying.
