Duke supplemental essays
Duke's required questions ask why the university fits your goals and how a community shaped you. Applicants may choose one optional question if it adds something the rest of the application does not show.
Writing format
Two required 250-word answers and one optional 250-word answer
What to prepare
- 1In the Why Duke answer, connect a specific academic or campus opportunity to an interest you have already pursued.
- 2For the community answer, explain what you did or learned in a community and what you would bring to Duke.
- 3Consider an optional response about viewpoints, a respectful disagreement, or a recent excitement only if it adds new evidence.
How to approach the writing
- Give each required response a different purpose: fit in one, lived community experience in the other.
- Use the optional slot for a meaningful missing dimension, not an extra résumé paragraph.
