About this scholarship
West Virginia high school graduates with at least a 3.0 GPA who plan to attend a public or independent two- or four-year college in West Virginia may qualify for the Promise Scholarship.
Recipients can receive up to $5,500 per year toward tuition and mandatory fees. Awards depend on annual funding from the West Virginia State Legislature, and combined aid from all sources cannot exceed the cost of attendance at your school.
Apply through the Promise application and file the FAFSA by the March 1 deadline. Additional documentation may be required.

- Complete the PROMISE Scholarship application (available October 1) and the FAFSA by the March 1 deadline
- West Virginia residency: student and parent/guardian must have lived in WV for 12 consecutive months before the deadline
- Maintain at least a 3.0 GPA (or 'B' average per county policy) in core courses and overall coursework
- Meet ACT (composite 21 with minimum 19 in each subsection) OR SAT (1080 total with 510 minimums in each section) by specified test dates
- Graduate from a West Virginia public or private high school, completing at least half of graduation credits in-state
- Complete the PROMISE Scholarship application.
- Maintain at least a 3.0 GPA (or a B average under applicable county policy) in core courses and overall coursework.
