About this scholarship
Academically talented residents of Virginia, designated Michigan counties, Chicago-area schools, New Trier High School, or the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy may apply for the Bell Scholarship if pursuing science-related degrees in UM Engineering or LSA.
Awards provide up to $20,000 per year for Virginia and Illinois-area recipients, or up to $10,000 per year for Michigan county recipients, renewable for four years with a 3.0 GPA. Applicants need a minimum 3.0 high school GPA and must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents.
Submit a separate application due March 1 with an essay. Carlos and Gloria Bell established this merit scholarship to recruit talented science students from designated geographic areas.

- Put your name and UMID in the upper right-hand corner of the essay

- Application and essay due electronically by 11:59 pm EST on March 1st
- High school GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
- Full-time student pursuing an undergraduate degree in engineering, mathematics, physics, computer science, or another related scientific field
- Enroll in the U-M College of Engineering or College of Literature, Science, and the Arts
- U.S. Citizen or Permanent U.S. Resident
- Residency/school eligibility (Virginia; specified Michigan counties; New Trier HS Winnetka IL; Chicago public/parochial/private school grads; Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy grads in Aurora)
- Renewable for four years with a 3.0 GPA.
- Applicant must provide a UMID on the essay.
