About this scholarship

The Stulberg International String Competition in Kalamazoo, Michigan recognizes exceptional young players of violin, viola, cello, or double bass. Applicants must be age 19 or under as of January 1 of the competition year; students of that year's judges may not apply.

Entrants submit an audition video and application online with a $150 fee. Twelve semifinalists travel to Kalamazoo in May to perform Bach and a concerto movement live; six finalists compete in a finals concert.

The Gold Medalist receives $10,000 plus concerto performances with the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra and Baltimore Chamber Orchestra; the Silver Medal carries $7,000, the Bronze $5,000, and remaining semifinalists receive $1,000 stipends. Applications open October 15 and are due February 1 each year.
