About this scholarship

South Carolina residents pursuing a first undergraduate degree full time at an eligible independent nonprofit college in South Carolina may receive this need-based grant. Independent students, or the parent of a dependent student, must have been legally domiciled in South Carolina for at least 12 months before the start of the fall semester. Students must enroll in at least 12 eligible credit hours per semester, meet federal Title IV aid rules, and complete the required State Felony, Drug, and Alcohol Affidavit annually.

The maximum grant is set annually by the Tuition Grants Commission (up to $5,000 for 2026-27). Actual awards depend on FAFSA-demonstrated need, institutional cost of attendance, and state funding.

Submit the FAFSA by the August 1 deadline and work with your college financial aid office. Returning students must meet Satisfactory Academic Progress.

Administered by the South Carolina Higher Education Tuition Grants Commission with annual state appropriations.
