About this scholarship

Doctoral students in actuarial science or related fields in the U.S. or Canada who hold or are pursuing an actuarial designation and have passed at least two actuarial exams may apply. The James C. Hickman Scholar stipend provides up to $20,000 per academic year for qualified educational expenses and is renewable once.

Submit an application and Statement of Interest by the March deadline. The program supports candidates pursuing academic careers in actuarial science.

  • Actuarial Exam Transcripts for exams passed with organizations other than the SOA
  • Statement of Progress - submitted directly by PhD Program Supervisor/Director
  • Reference Letters (maximum of 3; a reference from a credentialed actuary is encouraged)
  • Eligibility: must have at least two actuarial exams passed; must be a current/entering doctoral student in actuarial science or related field
  • Application deadline: March 2, 2026, 11:59 p.m. Central Time
  • Stipend supports qualified educational expenses.
  • Renewable once.
