About this scholarship
African American high school seniors from Dallas County or surrounding areas, or Bridge Scholars, with at least a 2.5 GPA who demonstrate financial need may apply if they are admitted to a Texas-accredited four-year college or university.
One recipient receives a $2,000 award disbursed in two payments.
Complete the online application with a 500-word essay on legacy, three sealed recommendations, an official transcript, and a signed disbursement disclaimer. Finalists participate in a virtual interview.
The award honors Sammie Lee Earles Lewis, an educator and community leader dedicated to empowering young people.

- Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent)
- Must be a high school senior who is a U.S. citizen and African American, attending school in Dallas County or surrounding counties (or a Bridge Scholar accepted to a Texas-accredited 4-year institutio
- Copy of acceptance letter / proof of admission to a Texas-accredited 4-year institution
- Completed, signed and dated application form
- Three (3) sealed recommendations on official letterhead: one teacher (letter), one counselor (form required, letter encouraged), and one other (mentor/coach/employer letter)
- Official high school transcript including first-semester senior-year grades in a sealed envelope
- Scholarship Funds Disbursement Disclaimer signed by parent/guardian
- Grade Release Form signed by applicant and parent/guardian
- If selected as a finalist, must attend a virtual interview with the selection committee
- Essay formatting: double-spaced, 12-point Times New Roman, one-inch margins, name in upper right corner of each page
