About this scholarship

Law students at SMU Dedman School of Law, UNT Dallas College of Law, or Texas A&M University School of Law who have overcome hardship and demonstrate determination and resilience may apply. The scholarship aims to diversify the Dallas legal community to reflect the region's socioeconomic backgrounds.

The award covers full tuition and fees, initially for one year and renewable for years two and three while the student remains in good standing. The Foundation has awarded nearly $3 million in Hughes scholarships since 1981.

Applications are available through career counseling offices at the three participating DFW law schools; SMU also accepts direct applications to the Dallas Bar Foundation by February 15 for entering students admitted to the J.D. program.

The Dallas Bar Foundation renamed this award in 1982 to honor Judge Sarah T. Hughes, the federal judge who swore in President Lyndon Johnson.
