About this scholarship
Second-year medical students at U.S. LCME- or COCA-accredited schools may apply for need-based scholarships demonstrating commitment to community-focused practice. Twenty students are selected annually.
Each award provides $10,000 per year, renewable for up to three years while the student remains eligible. This is separate from NBME's USMLE fee assistance program on the same page.
The 2026 application window runs April 6 through May 17 and had closed by July 2026. Applications are handled through National Medical Fellowships.
NBME partners with NMF to reduce financial barriers for medical students pursuing careers serving underserved communities.
